Seeds: Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass is found over all of the cool, humid parts of the United States, but it’s not native to North America. Colonists brought Kentucky bluegrass seed to this country in mixtures with other grasses. Kentucky bluegrass is the primary turfgrass species for home lawns, grounds, parks and athletic fields. There are more than 100 species. In the South, Kentucky bluegrass is limited to the transition zone from North Carolina through much of Tennessee, from northern Arkansas to the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle. In the West, Kentucky bluegrass is grown with irrigation. Kentucky bluegrass is the basic grass species for northern lawns due to its excellent winter hardiness. It recovers quickly from desiccation injury and is more tolerant of direct low-temperature injury than annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass.
